Dr. Fan founded and directs the Accessible & Pervasive User EXperience (APEX) Group to conduct research at the intersection of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), AI and VR/AR/Visualization, in particular focusing on 1) designing novel Assistive Technologies to empower older adults and people with disabilities, and 2) investigating Human-AI Collaboration/Teaming, often in the context of user experience (UX). Dr. Fan has authored over 80 peer-review papers in the leading international conferences and journals of HCI, Accessibility, and Visualization/VR/AR (e.g., CHI/TOCHI, TVCG/VIS, ASSETS) and has won numerous paper awards, including Best Paper Honorable Mention Awards at CHI 2023, Chinese CHI 2023, and UbiComp 2015, Best Paper Award at CHI 2019, and Best Artifact Award at ASSETS 2020. He currently serves as a subcommittee chair of CHI 2024, on the paper award committee of CSCW 2023, and on program committees of CSCW 2023 and ASSETS 2023 respectively.

Ph.D. (2024 Fall semester) and RA : I look for RA and PhD applicants with strong technical skills in one or two of the following areas:
AI/ML empowered intelligent system design: strong programming skills to build intelligent prototypes that integrate state-of-the-art AI/ML/NLP/CV algorithms with interactive user interfaces;
Physical computing: strong skills to put together hardware components (e.g., sensors, actuators, robots, ardunio, ESP32) and/or design PCB boards to create interactive physical prototypes that can sense and understand human/environmental context and interact with humans accordingly.
